Marabi. Sometimes said to be the national music of South Africa, Marabi refers to a music genre and culture developed in the slumyards of South Africa.

Pan African Music. Using traditional instruments (koras, flutes, balaphones, African violins, and fontonfrom drums, among others), this unique ensemble of 30 master musicians from Accra in Ghana, West Africa, performs a repertoire of contemporary music based on classical African themes.

Moroccan Gnawa Music. Randy Weston has spent a lifetime exploring the links between jazz and its antecedents. The resulting "Morocco and Gnawan music is a mixture of music south of the Sahara....a spiritual music and healing music."

Pan African Music in Theatre. Drawing on the arts of over fifty African countries, thousands of languages and ethnic groups, and hundreds of thousands of music and theater groups, Ki-Yi M'bock [KEE-yee mBAHK] strives to incorporate all the cultures, traditions, and arts on the African continent in a single multi-disciplinary organization.

Ugandan Music Tradition. Justinian Tamusuza, Professor of Music at Makerere University has pioneered contemporary music composition, but also promotes the preservation of Ugandans' traditional music. Several of the musicians taking part in Mother Courage, were taught by Tamusuza, and performed with his traditional ensemble, In 1992, Tamusuza's Chamber work for strings was recorded by the Kronos Quartet.

Village Pulse. The Village Pulse is a recording label that was established to preserve recordings of traditional music. The first Village Pulse titles present styles of West African drum music that have been largely unavailable to the outside world.
