Unit Overview:

This integrated unit is written to be used by the music teacher and/or the classroom teacher. It correlates with the John F. Kennedy Center’s production of The Nightingale. This dance-theatre production is an adaptation of the story written by Hans Christian Anderson. These lessons can be taught before or after students see the performance of The Nightingale, but they can be used even without attending the performance.

Lesson Overviews:

Listen to The Nightingale

Students learn music vocabulary and use it to assess music from The Nightingale.

Composing for The Nightingale

Students explore David Maddox's music from The Nightingale and create an original composition personifying the nightingale.

Music as a Storyteller

Students learn about music's ability to convey elements of storytelling, such as plot, tone, and characterization, in the Kennedy Center's production of The Nightingale.
