Unit Overview:

This unit includes various activities to encourage students, and in particular, ESOL students, to explore vocabulary related to peace, as well as their own feelings about peace. Students explore their personal feelings about peace through discussion and pantomime, and create and illustrate a peace poem. They then work as a group to create a "Peace Quilt" that documents their feelings about peace.

 

Lesson Overviews:

Peace 1: The Quilt Story

Students use pantomime to communicate places they find peace.

 

Peace 2: Writing and Illustrating a Diamante Poem

Students discuss and use vocabulary related to the concept of peace., then create a peace poem using diamante structure.

 

Peace 3: Making a Quilt

In this lesson, students learn and use vocabulary related to quilts and quilting.

 

Peace 4: Quilts

Students will explore quilt-making around the world, then decide on a design and create their own peace quilts.
