The lessons in this unit are dedicated to evoking a fresh appraisal of Louisa May Alcott, not only as a writer deeply invested in the issues of her times, but also as a compelling literary artist sensitive and dynamic in building her craft. To achieve these goals, "The Candle and the Mirror" lesson probes Alcott’s engagement in the philosophical, social, and political landscape of pre- and post-Civil War America. "Cheerful Hearts and Willing Feet" examines the content and form of Alcott’s beloved novel, Little Women, from a variety of perspectives.
