Overview

Watch the fascinating life of ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev unfold through the portraits of Jamie Wyeth. When American artist Wyeth met Nureyev in 1977, the dancer’s charismatic personality and immense talent immediately captivated him. Thus began a remarkable friendship, resulting in over 35 paintings and drawings of Nureyev. Explore a sampling of these incredible works—many of which are presented online for the first time.

 

Suggested Use

There are myriad ways to use this online exhibit. While students in lower grades can appreciate the gallery images, the supporting site materials are most appropriate for grades 7-12.

Wyeth’s depictions of Nureyev present an opportunity to explore the importance of observation skills in viewing and creating works of art. Download the step-by-step guide to taking a visual inventory and practice reading the artworks. Or, explore the idea of dance as visual movement-How is the essence of dance captured and conveyed through drawing?

The biographical information and related resources introduce the life and work of Nureyev and Wyeth, respectively.
