Overview

Take a peek at some of the most famous scenes from the beloved winter favorite, The Nutcracker.

Suggested Use

Use this set of video clips to prepare students for any of the related lessons or for a performance of The Nutcracker. The scenes here include excerpts from dances featuring the Snow Queen, the Mouse King and the children's party—well known characters in the ballet—as well as musical gems pieces such as Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy." Encourage students to observe the connection between dance and music; for example, the orchestration for "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" features a Celesta (similar to a piano but much higher in pitch) playing the main theme, and clarinets playing the downward runs—have students listen for these signature elements, and look for ways the music and the movements work together.

Technical Requirements
