Unit Overview:

Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka is adapted for stage by Leslie Bricusse and Tim McDonald from the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In adapting the book for a stage musical they had to change some aspects of the play both adding and deleting parts. They also worked closely with the lyricists to connect and tell the story through song.

The three lessons are taken from different aspects of the story, but all using imagination, one of the key elements of the musical. Using different items and ideas from the musical students will design a unique individual board game in one of the lessons, using their creativity and powers of persuasion they will try to get Willy Wonka to design a new product in the second lesson, and finally in the third lesson they will design their own miniature sets for a scene in the book or play. These lessons can be taught in any order, however it is important that the students are familiar with the book or the musical.
