Our introduction to the life and works of Rudolf Nureyev includes the following pages:

Rudolf Nureyev: A Lifetime of Dance

Nothing could stop the determined Rudolf Nureyev from dancing. Not his father. Not his lack of rigorous training as a child. Not even the Soviet government. In fact, the young boy from the small town of Ufa grew up to become one of the most world-renowned dancers in history.

Running from the Law

Rudolf Nureyev wanted to be a successful dancer, and he wanted to dance in all of the major theaters—in the West as well as the East. But the government of the then-Communist Soviet Union viewed Nureyev's desire to mingle with the West with suspicion.

Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev: The Unlikely Pair Who Created a Legendary Partnership

When Fonteyn and Nureyev began partnering in 1962, their careers were at radically different stages and their performance styles were in sharp contrast. Surprisingly, this unlikely pair created extraordinary magic on stage.

The Artist Paints the Dancer

When Jamie Wyeth met Rudolf Nureyev in 1974 at a party, he was immediately intrigued by the alluring dancer. Wyeth asked him if he would pose for some portraits, but Nureyev declined. Three years passed before the dancer would relent.
