Due mainly to the varying accounts of Armstrong's birthday--and
the centennial thereof-- the past two years have seen many events
celebrating the man and his music. Events are present here in chronological
order; upcoming events are last. All events of
ongoing interest, or with an online presence, will remain on the
site as a permanent resource.
PAST EVENTS
The New Orleans Jazz Walk of Fame celebrated the Louis Armstrong
centenary with the unveiling of a Louis Armstrong statue on July
4, 2000, one hundred years after the birthdate claimed by Armstrong
all his life.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in New Orleans, LA, the church in
which Armstrong was baptized, hosted a free concert in honor of
Louis including local bands, singers, and choirs on August 25, 2000.
The Hollywood Bowl, an outdoor pavilion in Hollywood, CA, produced
the Louis Armstrong 100th Birthday Celebration, with many noted
jazz bands and musicians playing Armstrong's music on September
13, 2000.

Alice Tully Hall in New York, NY was home to a live PBS broadcast
on December 13, 2000 of Armstrong--"When the Saints Go Marching
In," a musical tribute to Louis Armstrong by Wynton Marsalis
and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, along with many other jazz
artists and musical guests.

Trumpeter Marcus Belgrave headed a tribute to Louis Armstrong presented
by the Jazz Development Workshop on December 28, 2000 at the Museum
of African American History.

Jazz at the Lincoln Center presents The Armstrong Lecture Series,
featuring Tad Jones, New Orleans scholar, on October 23, 2000; writer
and artistic consultant Loren Schoenberg on December 11, 2000; and
bassist Arvell Shaw, a former Armstrong band member, on March 26,
2001.

Armstrong Legacy Series, with performances from the Andy Bey Trio
(November 17, 2000), the Etta Jones Trio (February 2, 2001), Shirley

The New Orleans Jazz Legacy Foundation's festival called "Jazz
Coming Home-Nicholas Payton Celebrates 100 Years of Louis Armstrong"
