This 10-episode documentary celebrates jazz through interviews, concert footage, and other historical documentation from jazz music's early roots in blues and ragtime to its development into swing, bebop and fusion. Episodes 2-4 include footage of and about Louis Armstrong.

This film presents a diverse portrait of Louis Armstrong through over a dozen of his performances from 1932 through the 1960s, excerpts of films Armstrong had appeared in, home movies, nightclub footage, numerous television appearances with Dizzy Gillespie, Jack Teagarden, and the All Stars, and interviews with Arvell Shaw, Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis, Dexter Gordon, Dave Brubeck, and others.

In this short film, Armstrong and his All-Stars play various selections.

Jazz Festival Vol. 1- Armstrong, Louis/Condon, Eddie (1960; length unknown; Storyville)
This video includes 1962 performances by The Louis Armstrong All Stars and The Eddie Condon All Stars. Originally recorded as promotional films for the Goodyear Tire Company, these performances are among the finest film recordings of jazz music during that period.

Jazz on a Summer's Day (1958; 1 hr. 25 min.; Columbia TriStar Home Video; Bert Stern)
This video combines footage from the Newport Jazz Festival with highlights of the 1958 America's Cup Race. Performers include Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Jimmy Giuffre, Anita O'Day, and Jack Teagarden.

The Story of Jazz (1957; 1 hr. 36 min.; Music Video Distributors)
This video includes clips, interview, commentary, and rare concert footage to celebrate jazz from the 1830's and on.

Hollywood Rhythm: The Paramount Musical Shorts 1929-1941, V. 4 - Rhapsodies in Black and Blue (1930; 78 min.; Paramount)
This volume contains eight musical shorts from Paramount, including Armstrong's 1932 "Rhapsody in Black and Blue."

"Cabin in the Sky" (MGM/Turner Movie CLM)

The first all-star, all-black musical released by Hollywood, Cabin in the Sky was the directorial debut of Vincente Minnelli and is based on the Broadway musical by Lynne Root, John LaTouche and Vernon Duke. In the film, a shantytown resident must choose between his wife and a seductress. The cast includes Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, The Hall Johnson Choir, and Louis Armstrong.
