Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and North Springfield Elementary School have collaborated in a cross-age project inspired by traditional Irish music.
The NSES students participating in the Irish Music Exchange are approximately 60 5th grade students who will perform a piece entitled "Penny Whistle" by Teresa Jennings. The students have been divided into three groups -- one group singing the song, one group accompanying on the Orff instruments -- glockenspiels, metallophones and xylophones -- and one group accompanying on recorders. Some students will be improvising on recorders and glockenspiels during certain "bridges" of the piece. Three pre-school children will play xylophones during portions of the piece as well. Patrick Jones, a TJHSST student and musician, will perform "Penny Whistle" on cello and penny whistle. The multiple tracks will be woven together by Sarie Feld, Patrick Jones, Fran Tompkins, and Nick Visco.
On May 17, the day the musicians visit our schools, they will interact with and perform for the 11th grade humanities classes at TJHSST. The classes focus on American history and culture, and have been prepared by watching the Ireland CD-ROM, and by listening to samples of Irish traditional music. At NSES, the musicians will hear the students perform "Penny Whistle," hear Patrick Jones play the penny whistle and hammered dulcimer, and perform for an elementary school audience of 500. They will finish their day back at TJHSST for an interactive concert open to any interested students.
