Gathering Seaweed on the Strand, Malahide

Working on the continent for seventeen years, and painting with Millet and Corot at Barbizon and with Money and Renoir at Bourron Marlotte, Nathaniel Hone introduced nineteenth-century French naturalism to Irish painting. Gathering Seaweed on the Strand, Malahide a typical example of the artist's work after he returned to permanent residence in Ireland, also reveals Hone's admiration for the cloudy skies and subdued palette of Dutch painters of the Hague School (1860-1900).

This painting formerly belonged to the collection of John Quinn, like Brian Burns, a serious Irish-American collector and patron of Irish arts and letters.
