JOHN LAVERY, RA, RHA, RSA (1856-1941) Sunset - The Caravan Oil on canvas Collection of Brian P. Burns |

Sunset - The CaravanNorthern Africa has exerted a strong pull on the imagination of European painters from Delacroix to Matisse. Within easy reach of southern Mediterranean ports, Morocco offered a sharply different, oriental world which owed little or nothing to Europe. Lavery first visited Northern Africa in 1891 and became deeply attracted to Tangiers, "The White City," and was to return many times. Sunset - The Caravan was painted in North Africa and shows Lavery's clear delight in the exotic spectacle of the diminutive caravan set amid a towering landscape of sea, sky, and desert headland. |
