Artist's MotherThe calm, attentive woman depicted in At the Breakfast Table is again the subject of this portrait, Artistıs Mother. The overall warm tones of the room surrounding her imply she sits before a fire, reading or needlepointing. A warm, comforting silence permeates the painting. She is older than the image of herself depicted in At the Breakfast Table , indicated by the subtle grey strokes in the hair which frames her face, and in the spectacles balanced delicately on her nose. The expression, however, remains that of the younger woman: quiet, with a serene solidity portrayed with a lovingly subtle hand. |
