Celtic Twilight

George Russell met W. B. Yeats when he was a student at the Metropolitan Art School. Out of a joint interest and enthusiasm for Celtic folklore, they founded the literary movement in the 1890's known as "The Celtic Twilight." Although originally trained as an artist, George Russell was better known as a poet, journalist, and editor, writing under the pseudonym Æ (an abbreviation of the word Æon). His paintings clearly parallel his literary interest in the mystical and ethereal atmosphere found in the Irish landscape.
