JACK B. YEATS On To Glory, c. 1911 oil on canvas Collection of Brian P. Burns |
|||
On To GloryIn On to Glory, Yeats's ideal youth - the golden-hared child - has a companion in a magnificent, chestnut pony, who lowers its head submissively toward the bridle in the child's hand. Roadway and distant sea beckon the child toward the unknown. Evoking freedom and adventure, the motifs of horse and road recur in Yeat's work. The nostalgic landscape recalls Sligo, Yeat's childhood home, where a perfect rapport between child and horse once was possible. |
