Patriotic AirsYeats depicts Dublin's Gaiety Theatre in 1923, shortly after the formation of the Irish Free State. The conductor leads the orchestra in a customary medley of national tunes during the intermission. Painting from memory, the artist overlooks nothing: the lowered safety curtain covered with barely-legible advertisements, the boredom and lassitude of prosperous Dublin theater-goers, who have already forgotten the ideals of the nationalist struggle for independence. |
