B. YEATS The Embanked Road, c. 1945/46 oil on canvas Collection of Brian P. Burns |

The Embanked Road, 1939In The Embanked Road, a single horse and driver hurtle along an open road toward the unknown. The dynamism of this small canvas delivers an almost apocalyptic effect as horse and driver rush into another world. Yeats's swirling brushstrokes and bold use of color evoke speed and urgency. Turbulent streaks of blue in the sky around the driver's head and patches of unmixed primary color in the left foreground give way to an opaque white light hat beckons the rushing pair. |
