Program Overview

What grade level is recommended for the program?
A classroom of students in grades 6-8 is most appropriate.

How many students can be involved in the program?
One class of approximately 20-30 students is ideal for the success of the program.

Who from my school should be involved in the program?
The principal must approve the program (see application). A classroom teacher team participating in the program must be actively involved. Involvement of a media specialist is helpful; however, it is not necessary to have a media specialist in order to participate in the program. The teaching artists will instruct the teacher team and students on how to use the equipment.

How much time will it take to complete the project?
If your school is selected for the program, it is anticipated that the following approximate time commitment is needed:

  • 20 hours during months before bus arrives
Review materials, checklists, and complete forms and Memorandum of Understanding sent in the Confirmation Packet. You will need to familiarize yourself with the curriculum for the program and reconfirm all arrangements for program.
  • 30 hours during two week residency of bus
Devote class time (approx. two hour each school day) and after-school time (approx. one hour each school day) during the three week residency of bus. There will also be an orientation and out of school training time between teacher(s) and On Location staff.
  • 20 hours over month following residency
This is time that will probably be needed to complete the video.

Will I receive a copy of the curriculum?
Yes. A copy of the curriculum will be sent to you approximately one month prior to the bus arriving in your community.

Who developed the curriculum?
The curriculum is being adapted from from "Creative Learning for Your Classroom," a product of MhzNetworks, and is used with permission. A team of curriculum supervisors has adapted the 2009 curriculum to account for the longer instruction time devoted to the 2010 residency program.

What happens after the bus leaves the school?
See "After the Bus Leaves" section.

Artist Interviewed

On what kind of artist or arts organization should the video focus?
A living artist or arts organization that reflects the culture, heritage, history, etc. of your community.

What is the time commitment needed from the artist/arts organization?
Three-four hours is the anticipated time needed from the artist/arts group.

  • Cooperate with the class research (filling out the form, working with the teacher on scheduling interview[s])
  • Setting aside time (approx. two hours) for the class to visit and interview artist/group
  • Be available for follow up questions and/or reshooting or voice over recording.

Equipment

What is in the media equipment package?
One Apple iMac computer, one digital camera, iLife 09’ software, and peripherals.

How much space in the classroom do we need for setting up the media equipment?
A level desk for the computer that has access to a standard electrical outlet. There should be a secure (locked) space in which the camera and other peripherals can be stored. We recommend that the equipment reside in the participating classroom rather than a separate room. However, we will defer to the teacher's decision.

When will the media equipment arrive at the school?
The equipment will arrive the week before the bus arrives at your school.

Who will install the equipment?
The teaching artists will set-up the computer and other equipment during the first few days of the residency.

Bus

What kind of parking space do we need for the bus?
A level, secure area that has access to electricity.

Does the bus need to plug in for electricity somewhere at my school?
Yes. The bus has a long extension cord (100') that needs to be plugged into a 220v outlet. This is not your standard 120v outlet that is in most classrooms. A 220v outlet is generally used for stoves, dryers, etc. Your head custodian/building maintenance person should be able to determine where/if the school has 220v outlets. The 220v outlet should be near the level parking space for the bus (within 100').

The bus is a media studio for use by the teaching artists. It will also contain a meeting space for small groups and room for screenings.

Will the bus be secured each night?
The bus will be locked each night and there is a security alarm system that is engaged each night when the teaching artists leave for the day.

What will be on the bus?
The bus is a media studio for use by the theater teaching artist and the media teaching artist. It will also contain a meeting space for small groups.

Will my students be able to go on the bus?
There will be opportunities for multiple small groups (five to eight) of participating students to visit the bus. There is not enough space for more than eight students to be on the bus at one time.

Is the bus the same as one on which students travel to school?
Yes, the "On Location" bus is built by Thomas Bus, one of the major bus companies that provides transportation for students to and from schools throughout the United States. This bus has been custom-converted to a media studio especially for this project.

After the Bus Leaves

How will I stay in contact with the teaching artists?
You will be able to follow the teaching artists on their journey through the Web site. The Kennedy Center's ARTSEDGE staff will continue to provide curricular and creative support as well.

When will the school receive the $1,000 check for ongoing support of this initiative?
Upon receipt of the completed video, a check will be issued in the school's name and mailed to the teacher whose class participated in the program.

Will there be continuing opportunities for the school to work with the Kennedy Center?
It is our hope that students will develop additional videos to be shared through this Web site and other areas of the ARTSEDGE network.
