Eating with Chopsticks

People eating with chopsticks"Hashi," or chopsticks, are used throughout Asia instead of a knife and fork. They were developed in Japan over 1300 years ago and are made out of wood or plastic. Japanese children are taught to eat with chopsticks like American children are taught to eat with a fork. It may take a little practice before you can eat with chopsticks without throwing food at your neighbor!

In the Japanese culture, it is considered rude to stick your chopsticks into the middle of a piece of food. It is also rude to take food off of another person's plate with your chopsticks or to take food off of a serving plate with the end of the chopsticks which have been in your mouth. When eating soup, raise the noodles to your mouth with the chopsticks and suck them in. It is okay to make a slurping noise! Men generally make louder slurps than women, and this is socially acceptable.

Try Eating With Chopsticks

Here are some directions to help you learn to eat with chopsticks. Remember, it will take a lot of practice!

Rest one chopstick at the base of your thumb. Hold it there with the first knuckle of your ring finger. Then, hold the other chopstick between your thumb and index finger. Move the top chopstick to pick up food while keeping the bottom one still. Break food into bite-sized pieces before lifting them to your mouth. Remember, this will take some practice!

Try it with sticky or dry food at first. Round or wet, slippery foods will be much harder.

Write a short journal entry for your scrapbook about the manners and customs at your dinner table.

Visit today's related Cultural Connection.

When you are finished, submit your journal entry to our Student Showcase.
