Cultural Connections

The Cultural Connections part of our tour gives you the opportunity to learn more about the lifestyles, traditions, and history of the the cities the orchestra visited. The musicians learned new and exciting things every day of their travels and so will you!
(Teachers, click here for more information on using these pages.)

How the Cultural Connections are Organized:

We can visit the three cities which the NSO toured while in China: Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. We can also visit visit the cities of Osaka, Oita, Nagoya, Yokahama and Tokyo, which the orchestra saw while in Japan. We have organized the Cultural Connections based on the city and country that the NSO visited each day. Each day of the tour also offers a chance for you to do an activity and save it as a souvenir in your Asian Scrapbook.

We suggest that the activities be used along with the Cultural Connections on this site. This way, you and your teacher will have the background you need to be able to create your souvenirs.

Teachers: All of the culture pages on this site go along with the National Symphony Orchestra tour of China and Japan which took place from January 25-February 10, 1999, offering a chance for students to explore a different aspect of Asian culture. However, we encourage your classes to visit the cultural information pages in any order and on any day, even after the tour has ended! We suggest that the Cultural Connections be used along with the activities on this site. The activities listed above will enhance and reinforce the knowledge that students will gain on these pages.
